How a Septic System Works

Septic systems are localized wastewater treatment solutions that use soil to treat wastewater, often in rural or large-lot areas. They are typically used in rural or large lot settings where centralized wastewater treatment is impractical and unnecessary. Today, a variety of septic systems exist to suit different needs. While all septic systems are individually designed for each site, most septic systems are based on the same principles. Septic systems are not complicated. The main parts of a septic system include a septic tank, a distribution box, and a drainfield, all connected via pipes known as conveyance lines. Your septic system treats your household wastewater by temporarily holding it in the septic tank where heavy solids and lighter scum are allowed to separate from the wastewater. This separation process is known as primary treatment. The tanks solids are broken down by bacteria and should be removed, along with scum, by a licensed septic service. After the partially treated wastewater leaves the tank, it flows into a distribution box, which separates this flow evenly into a network of drainfield trenches. The wastewater then drains into gravel trenches, slowly filtering through the soil for secondary treatment, where it is purified before replenishing groundwater and flowing into a water source. Some homes may still have a (cesspool) an underground tank that stores sewage with an inlet pipe but no outlet.

How the ST Pro Plumbing Works on Your Tank

The ST Pro Plumbing has experience going back several years, in septic cleaning and septic system maintenance. Our teams knowledge of septic systems is supported by years of hands-on work. Its important for homeowners to be aware of how their septic tank works, even with professional maintenance. Septic tanks differ, but the basic function is consistent across systems. Gravity moves wastewater from your home into the septic tank. Wastewater stays in the tank for about one or two days. During this time the substances in the water are broken down by the anaerobic bacteria inside the tank. These bacteria separate the wastewater into solids, greases, oils, and floating substances. Bacteria do much of the work, but certain materials cannot be dissolved without maintenance. In every septic tank there is a layer of ‘scum’ floating at the top, in the middle there is a layer of partially treated or “grey” water, and heavy, thick sludge lines the bottom of the tank. Our experts manage the equilibrium of the three layers to keep your system functioning correctly. The grey water exits the tank after one or two days into the absorption area. Its made up of perforated pipes buried in trenches containing sand, gravel, or other dense, loose fill. The health and condition of your drain field is integral to the continued performance of your septic system, and as such, it will be regularly evaluated by us. The soil surrounding the pipes filters the effluent, removing remaining waste. The toxins, bacteria, or viruses in the wastewater are broken down by the microorganisms and the oxygen in the soil. Effective soil filtration lets the septic system release clean water back into the ground. We can make sure that your drain field is working ideally. Since this wastewater could have come from a toilet, washing machine, shower, or sink, the types of debris found in it can be of a wide variety. The bacteria already inside the septic tank can handle most of these easily. Our experts are available to handle any clogs or system backups.

Proper Maintenance of Septic Systems

The accumulated solids in the bottom of the septic tank should be pumped out every two to three years. For large households with heavy usage, or homes with whirlpools, hot tubs, or garbage disposals, it may be necessary to pump the septic tank every year. Current installations require a filter at the tank outlet to protect and extend the life of the drainfield system. Its important to check this filter when the tank is being emptied. A properly designed and maintained septic system requires minimal care. A septic system typically costs less than sewer services and helps keep water on-site, benefiting plants and wells.

Signs of a Failing Septic System

  • Sewage pooling over the drainfield, especially following storms
  • Lush, green growth over the drainfield
  • Slow-draining toilets or drains
  • Unpleasant sewage odors

Carrier Mills, formerly Carrier's Mills and Morrilsville, also known as Catskin, is a village in Saline County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,672 at the 2020 census. Carrier Mills was named after George Washington Carrier's saw and grist mills, and was one of the early Cairo and Vincennes Railroad boomtowns. Founded as a mill town and then a coal mining community, Carrier Mills has slowly lost 44% of its population since the 1920 census high of 3,000, due to the decline of the local coal industry. The village has primarily become a bedroom community, located seven miles (11 km) southwest of Harrisburg, which is the village's main source of employment, entertainment, and shopping. It is the third largest community in the Harrisburg Micropolitan Statistical Area outside of Eldorado and Harrisburg, and included in the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky Tri-State Area. Carrier Mills also has a large African American population at 15%, compared to its neighbors, due to migration from the nearby community of Lakeview, the oldest African American settlement in the state of Illinois.
