How a Septic System Works

Septic systems are localized wastewater treatment solutions that use soil to treat wastewater, often in rural or large-lot areas. Usually employed in rural and large-lot settings, septic systems are used when centralized wastewater treatment is not an option. Today, a variety of septic systems exist to suit different needs. Even though septic systems are designed individually for each location, they generally operate on the same core principles. Septic systems are not complicated. The main parts of a septic system include a septic tank, a distribution box, and a drainfield, all connected via pipes known as conveyance lines. Wastewater is temporarily stored in the septic tank, where solids settle at the bottom and scum floats on top, allowing for separation. This separation process is known as primary treatment. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and should be removed, along with the lighter scum, by a licensed septic tank pumper. The partially treated wastewater exits the tank, entering a distribution box that evenly distributes it to a series of drainfield trenches. The wastewater then drains into gravel trenches, slowly filtering through the soil for secondary treatment, where it is purified before replenishing groundwater and flowing into a water source. Some homes may still have a (cesspool) an underground tank that stores sewage with an inlet pipe but no outlet.

How the ST Pro Plumbing Works on Your Tank

With extensive experience in septic cleaning and maintenance, ST Pro Plumbing has a long history of service. Our teams knowledge of septic systems is supported by years of hands-on work. However, as a homeowner, it’s important for you to understand the working of your septic tank, even though our professionals will maintain it for you. Though every septic system is slightly different, each septic tank works in the same manner. Gravity moves wastewater from your home into the septic tank. This wastewater is held for one or two days in the tank. The tanks anaerobic bacteria decompose the wastewater over this time. These bacteria separate the wastewater into solids, greases, oils, and floating substances. Bacteria do much of the work, but certain materials cannot be dissolved without maintenance. Tanks have three layers: floating scum, middle grey water, and bottom sludge. Our experts manage the equilibrium of the three layers to keep your system functioning correctly. After remaining in the septic tank for one or two days, the “grey” wastewater inside the tank flows into the drain field. Its made up of perforated pipes buried in trenches containing sand, gravel, or other dense, loose fill. The health and condition of your drain field is integral to the continued performance of your septic system, and as such, it will be regularly evaluated by us. As the wastewater flows out of the holes along the pipes, it enters the soil, which acts as a natural filter for any remaining waste products in the water. Microbes in the soil, along with oxygen, break down harmful elements in the water. A properly functioning drain field allows a septic tank to replenish the surrounding area’s ground water table with clean, potable water. We inspect and maintain drain fields to guarantee proper operation. Since this wastewater could have come from a toilet, washing machine, shower, or sink, the types of debris found in it can be of a wide variety. The bacteria already inside the septic tank can handle most of these easily. In case of a clog or septic back-up, our professionals are always available.

Proper Maintenance of Septic Systems

The accumulated solids in the bottom of the septic tank should be pumped out every two to three years. For large households with heavy usage, or homes with whirlpools, hot tubs, or garbage disposals, it may be necessary to pump the septic tank every year. Current installations require a filter at the tank outlet to protect and extend the life of the drainfield system. Its important to check this filter when the tank is being emptied. With proper design and maintenance, a septic system requires little care. A septic system typically costs less than sewer services and helps keep water on-site, benefiting plants and wells.

Signs of a Failing Septic System

  • Sewage pooling over the drainfield, especially following storms
  • Lush, green growth over the drainfield
  • Drains or toilets that are slow to empty
  • Unpleasant sewage odors

The first non-native settlers to the area arrived between 1825 and 1830. Cass Lake drew many wealthy residents to purchase land along the lake for vacationing. In 1890, a railway line was built through Keego Harbor to connect to Detroit and Pontiac, making the area much more accessible. At the turn of the century, a prominent Pontiac lawyer, Joseph E. Sawyer, purchased and platted land just to the southwest along Orchard Lake. He built a canal to connect the smaller Dollar Lake to Cass Lake and declared the area to be a harbor on the eastern edge of Cass Lake. He named the area Keego, which was an Ojibwe word meaning "fish" from the poem The Song of Hiawatha. The community was originally part of West Bloomfield Township before incorporating as an independent city in 1955.
