How a Septic System Works

Septic systems are individual wastewater treatment systems that use the soil to treat small wastewater flows, usually from individual homes. Usually employed in rural and large-lot settings, septic systems are used when centralized wastewater treatment is not an option. There are many types of septic systems in use today. Even though septic systems are designed individually for each location, they generally operate on the same core principles. A septic system is not a complicated system. The main parts of a septic system include a septic tank, a distribution box, and a drainfield, all connected via pipes known as conveyance lines. Wastewater is temporarily stored in the septic tank, where solids settle at the bottom and scum floats on top, allowing for separation. The separation of solids and scum from liquid is the primary treatment process. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and should be removed, along with the lighter scum, by a licensed septic tank pumper. After the partially treated wastewater leaves the tank, it flows into a distribution box, which separates this flow evenly into a network of drainfield trenches. Drainage holes at the bottom of each line allow the wastewater to drain into gravel trenches for temporary storage, then slowly seeps into the subsurface soil where it is further treated and purified (secondary treatment) before replenishing the ground water and eventually flowing to a stream or other body of water. Some homes may still have a (cesspool) an underground tank that stores sewage with an inlet pipe but no outlet.

How the ST Pro Plumbing Works on Your Tank

The ST Pro Plumbing has experience going back several years, in septic cleaning and septic system maintenance. Our teams knowledge of septic systems is supported by years of hands-on work. Its important for homeowners to be aware of how their septic tank works, even with professional maintenance. Septic tanks differ, but the basic function is consistent across systems. Wastewater from your house is carried into the septic tank by gravity. This wastewater is held for one or two days in the tank. The tanks anaerobic bacteria decompose the wastewater over this time. These bacteria separate the wastewater into solids, greases, oils, and floating substances. Bacteria do much of the work, but certain materials cannot be dissolved without maintenance. In every septic tank there is a layer of ‘scum’ floating at the top, in the middle there is a layer of partially treated or “grey” water, and heavy, thick sludge lines the bottom of the tank. Our experts manage the equilibrium of the three layers to keep your system functioning correctly. After remaining in the septic tank for one or two days, the “grey” wastewater inside the tank flows into the drain field. Its made up of perforated pipes buried in trenches containing sand, gravel, or other dense, loose fill. We monitor your drain field closely because its condition directly affects system performance. As the wastewater flows out of the holes along the pipes, it enters the soil, which acts as a natural filter for any remaining waste products in the water. The toxins, bacteria, or viruses in the wastewater are broken down by the microorganisms and the oxygen in the soil. A properly functioning drain field allows a septic tank to replenish the surrounding area’s ground water table with clean, potable water. We can make sure that your drain field is working ideally. Household wastewater carries a mix of debris from toilets, showers, sinks, and washing machines. Existing bacteria break down the majority of these materials. Our experts are available to handle any clogs or system backups.

Proper Maintenance of Septic Systems

The accumulated solids in the bottom of the septic tank should be pumped out every two to three years. For large households with heavy usage, or homes with whirlpools, hot tubs, or garbage disposals, it may be necessary to pump the septic tank every year. Newer septic installations require a filter at the tank outlet to protect the drainfield and extend its lifespan. This must be checked when the tank is emptied. A properly designed and maintained septic system requires minimal care. Typically costs less than sewer fees and keeps water on site for replenishment of plants and wells.

Signs of a Failing Septic System

  • Sewage pooling over the drainfield, especially following storms
  • Lush, green growth over the drainfield
  • Slow-draining toilets or drains

The borough of Northern Cambria was incorporated on January 1, 2000. It was formed from the merger of two smaller municipalities, Barnesboro and Spangler. The merger proposal was taken to residents in the 1997 election, passing in Spangler 410-243 and in Barnesboro 466-324. The area was first settled by Europeans in the early-to-middle 19th century. The presence of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River allowed loggers to move their harvest downstream. Small farms developed, but the area changed in the 1890s when mining of the extensive bituminous coal fields in the area became the dominant industry. The mining companies required skilled workers, and many came from Great Britain and Eastern Europe. Railroads were built to transport the coal out, and the town flourished with the influx of money. In the 1980s, the coal industry began a decline, and there has been a subsequent decline in the population of the area. In November 1922, the Reilly Shaft No. 1 mine explosion occurred, killing 78 coal miners.
