How a Septic System Works

Septic systems are individual wastewater treatment systems that use the soil to treat small wastewater flows, usually from individual homes. They are typically used in rural or large lot settings where centralized wastewater treatment is impractical and unnecessary. There are many types of septic systems in use today. Even though septic systems are designed individually for each location, they generally operate on the same core principles. Septic systems are not complicated. A septic system consists of a septic tank, a distribution box and a drainfield, all connected by pipes called conveyance lines. Your septic system treats your household wastewater by temporarily holding it in the septic tank where heavy solids and lighter scum are allowed to separate from the wastewater. The separation of solids and scum from liquid is the primary treatment process. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and should be removed, along with the lighter scum, by a licensed septic tank pumper. The partially treated wastewater exits the tank, entering a distribution box that evenly distributes it to a series of drainfield trenches. The wastewater then drains into gravel trenches, slowly filtering through the soil for secondary treatment, where it is purified before replenishing groundwater and flowing into a water source. In some cases, homes may have a cesspool, a tank that collects sewage with an inlet pipe, but no outlet.

How the ST Pro Plumbing Works on Your Tank

With extensive experience in septic cleaning and maintenance, ST Pro Plumbing has a long history of service. Our teams knowledge of septic systems is supported by years of hands-on work. Its important for homeowners to be aware of how their septic tank works, even with professional maintenance. Septic tanks differ, but the basic function is consistent across systems. Gravity moves wastewater from your home into the septic tank. Wastewater stays in the tank for about one or two days. During this time the substances in the water are broken down by the anaerobic bacteria inside the tank. These bacteria separate the wastewater into solids, greases, oils, and floating substances. Bacteria do much of the work, but certain materials cannot be dissolved without maintenance. In every septic tank there is a layer of ‘scum’ floating at the top, in the middle there is a layer of partially treated or “grey” water, and heavy, thick sludge lines the bottom of the tank. Our experts manage the equilibrium of the three layers to keep your system functioning correctly. The grey water exits the tank after one or two days into the absorption area. Its made up of perforated pipes buried in trenches containing sand, gravel, or other dense, loose fill. We monitor your drain field closely because its condition directly affects system performance. The soil surrounding the pipes filters the effluent, removing remaining waste. Microbes in the soil, along with oxygen, break down harmful elements in the water. A properly functioning drain field allows a septic tank to replenish the surrounding area’s ground water table with clean, potable water. We inspect and maintain drain fields to guarantee proper operation. Since this wastewater could have come from a toilet, washing machine, shower, or sink, the types of debris found in it can be of a wide variety. Existing bacteria break down the majority of these materials. In case of a clog or septic back-up, our professionals are always available.

Proper Maintenance of Septic Systems

The accumulated solids in the bottom of the septic tank should be pumped out every two to three years. For large households with heavy usage, or homes with whirlpools, hot tubs, or garbage disposals, it may be necessary to pump the septic tank every year. Current installations require a filter at the tank outlet to protect and extend the life of the drainfield system. Its important to check this filter when the tank is being emptied. A properly designed and maintained septic system requires minimal care. Typically costs less than sewer fees and keeps water on site for replenishment of plants and wells.

Signs of a Failing Septic System

  • Sewage pooling over the drainfield, especially following storms
  • Lush, green growth over the drainfield
  • Drains or toilets that are slow to empty

Sellersville was founded in the early 18th century. It was centered on a major road known as Bethlehem Pike that connected Philadelphia to Bethlehem and the rest of what was then far Western Pennsylvania. The town was very small and was called Sellers Tavern. Its most notable feature was a large inn. The present Washington House in Sellersville, however, was not Sellers Tavern. The town grew slowly over the years until the Industrial Revolution. In the 1860s the North Pennsylvania Railroad was built, running parallel to Bethlehem Pike: this stimulated the growth of light textile industries and brought a wave of population growth. The East Branch of the Perkiomen Creek runs through the town which connects it to an adjacent town of Perkasie. This creek was dammed in the early 20th century creating a small body of water known as Lake Lenape. Along the length of the lake a park was built on Perkasie and Sellersville lands. In the 1920s and 1930s this park housed a carousel, a roller coaster and several other amusements. The railroad brought hundreds of people from Philadelphia in the summer time, and it became a well known vacation spot for blue collar city workers.
