How a Septic System Works

Septic systems are localized wastewater treatment solutions that use soil to treat wastewater, often in rural or large-lot areas. Usually employed in rural and large-lot settings, septic systems are used when centralized wastewater treatment is not an option. Today, a variety of septic systems exist to suit different needs. Even though septic systems are designed individually for each location, they generally operate on the same core principles. Septic systems are not complicated. The main parts of a septic system include a septic tank, a distribution box, and a drainfield, all connected via pipes known as conveyance lines. Your septic system treats your household wastewater by temporarily holding it in the septic tank where heavy solids and lighter scum are allowed to separate from the wastewater. The separation of solids and scum from liquid is the primary treatment process. The solids stored in the tank are decomposed by bacteria and should be removed, along with the lighter scum, by a licensed septic tank pumper. After the partially treated wastewater leaves the tank, it flows into a distribution box, which separates this flow evenly into a network of drainfield trenches. The wastewater then drains into gravel trenches, slowly filtering through the soil for secondary treatment, where it is purified before replenishing groundwater and flowing into a water source. In some cases, homes may have a cesspool, a tank that collects sewage with an inlet pipe, but no outlet.

How the ST Pro Plumbing Works on Your Tank

With extensive experience in septic cleaning and maintenance, ST Pro Plumbing has a long history of service. Our understanding of your septic system is backed up by this extensive work history. However, as a homeowner, it’s important for you to understand the working of your septic tank, even though our professionals will maintain it for you. Septic tanks differ, but the basic function is consistent across systems. Wastewater from your house is carried into the septic tank by gravity. This wastewater is held for one or two days in the tank. During this time the substances in the water are broken down by the anaerobic bacteria inside the tank. The bacteria help segregate solids, oils, greases, and other floating materials. While bacteria inside your septic tank will do a fine job of breaking down your home’s wastewater, our professionals know it can’t dissolve everything. Tanks have three layers: floating scum, middle grey water, and bottom sludge. Our experts manage the equilibrium of the three layers to keep your system functioning correctly. After remaining in the septic tank for one or two days, the “grey” wastewater inside the tank flows into the drain field. The drain field is a series of perforated pipes inside a trench filled with sand, gravel, tire chips, or other loose yet dense material. We monitor your drain field closely because its condition directly affects system performance. The soil surrounding the pipes filters the effluent, removing remaining waste. The toxins, bacteria, or viruses in the wastewater are broken down by the microorganisms and the oxygen in the soil. Effective soil filtration lets the septic system release clean water back into the ground. We can make sure that your drain field is working ideally. Since this wastewater could have come from a toilet, washing machine, shower, or sink, the types of debris found in it can be of a wide variety. The bacteria already inside the septic tank can handle most of these easily. Our experts are available to handle any clogs or system backups.

Proper Maintenance of Septic Systems

To keep your system running smoothly, the solids in the bottom of the septic tank should be pumped out every two to three years. For large households with heavy usage, or homes with whirlpools, hot tubs, or garbage disposals, it may be necessary to pump the septic tank every year. Newer septic installations require a filter at the tank outlet to protect the drainfield and extend its lifespan. This must be checked when the tank is emptied. With proper design and maintenance, a septic system requires little care. A septic system typically costs less than sewer services and helps keep water on-site, benefiting plants and wells.

Signs of a Failing Septic System

  • Sewage surfacing over the drainfield (especially after storms)
  • Lush, green growth over the drainfield
  • Slow-draining toilets or drains
  • Unpleasant sewage odors

Historically, the land that Center Line came to occupy was swamp and wilderness until the early nineteenth century. As land became scarce, French, German, Belgian, and Irish immigrants began clearing the forests and draining the swamps. Center Line was known as "Kunrod's Corner" during the mid-nineteenth century. The theory is that the French named it "Center Line" because it was the middle of three Potawatomi trails from Fort Detroit to northern trading posts. The "center line" was the trail used from Detroit to Utica. The community received its initial start when Catholics decided to build a church so that they would not have to walk to St. Mary's in Detroit for Sunday Mass. This church (St. Clement's) was established in 1854 and attracted more Catholic settlers into the area. In 1863, the first general store was constructed by Joeseph Buechel. On July 19, 1878, Hieronymous Engelmann was the first postmaster, and he was succeeded in 1885 by Sophia Buechel. The "Centre Line" post office closed on July 31, 1906, and the name was restored to Center Line thereafter. In this era, street car tracks connected Detroit to Center Line along Van Dyke Road, and Ten Mile Road was the final stop of the street car. The village was incorporated in 1925 in the center of Warren Township, which is now the city of Warren, and was incorporated as a city in 1936.
